Get Your Geek On: The
5th Annual Geek Fest is Coming to the CPCC Levine Campus
November
13

Who
said being a geek isn’t chic? THE Geek Fest 2008, coming to the
CPCC Levine Campus (2800 Campus Ridge Road, Matthews, N.C.) on
Thursday, Nov. 13, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., highlights the latest
in technology, innovations, and career opportunities. Students, CPCC
employees, and the Charlotte community are encouraged to participate.

In addition to showcasing many of CPCC’s innovations
and learning opportunities, The Geek Fest recognizes regional and
national businesses for their innovations. Topics represented this
year include inventing, simulation and gaming, animation, green
technologies and sustainability, e-learning, digital media,
biotechnologies, sciences and much more. Activities will include
vendor demonstrations and activities, guest speakers, webcasts, video
game tournaments, music, contests, door prizes and much more. The
general innovations festival and activities will run from 9:00 a.m. -
2:00 p.m. followed by professional seminars and trainings from 1:00 -
4:00 p.m.

Central Piedmont Community College programs
contributing to this initiative include eLearning, Student Life, The
Future’s Institute, automotive technology, music, information
technology, simulation and game development, engineering, welding
technology, graphic design, forensics, career services, corporate
training and many more. Students can learn more about educational and
career opportunities while also exploring exciting new developments.

Some of the keynote speakers at THE Geek Fest include:

Louis Foreman, founder and chief executive of Enventys

“Becoming an Everyday Edison – How to Progress
from Ideas to Innovations”

Have a great idea? How do
you harness it, turn it into reality, and make money from it? This
session will introduce attendees to steps they can take to turn ideas
into innovations. Foreman is the founder and chief executive of
Enventys, an integrated product design and engineering firm with
offices in Charlotte and Hong Kong. He is a prolific inventor of nine
registered U.S. Patents and his firm is responsible for the
development of well over 150 more. Foreman also serves as the
executive producer and judge for a new inventor’s TV show
called Everyday Edisons, which appears nationally on PBS stations.

Tom Wright,
Computer Graphics Learning Center (CGLC)

“Behind the
Scenes of 3D Animation Film Making”
Tom Wright has more
than 10 years of experience working for a variety of studios in the
CG animation industry. A visual effects artist whose résumé
includes working for Dreamworks Animation and Walt Disney Feature
Animation, Wright recently wrapped up production on Madagascar 2 and
has collaborated on high-level film and television projects with
Nickelodeon, Warner Brothers and New Line Cinema. His presentation
will provide attendees with a rare look at how the most popular
studios take an idea from a simple concept to creation. During the
session he will closely inspect each step of the production process,
from story visual development to lighting to post-production.

Mike Moore,
Ampmobile Conversions, LLC

“How’s
and Why’s of Electrical Vehicles”

As the cost of
gasoline increases, the general public is turning more and more to
alternative fuel vehicles. During this session, attendees will be
introduced to the differences in electric vehicle systems,
descriptions of batteries used in transportation and much more.

THE Geek Fest 2008
marks our fifth year, and is being sponsored this year by Sonic
Foundry; Ampmobile Conversions, LLC; CPCC Student Life; and CPCC
eLearning.

Participants can register to win big prizes
including iPods, gadgets, software, games, gift certificates, shirts
and more. To find out more about THE Geek Fest and see a full
